Barock
Baroque Period
In the Baroque period, the Church prescribed itself the greatest push for renewal that is still visible today. To this day, its churches have been towering far into the horizon. An unprecedented reformatting of what already existed was carried out in architecture, painting and sculpture: Large new monastery buildings or extensions such as in StLambrecht, Seckau, Vorau, Pöllau, Stainz and Rein as well as new church buildings and alterations right down to the smallest village were scheduled for the period between 1615 and 1780. Mariazell, Mariatrost, St Veit amVogau, the Mariahilf Church in Graz and Weizberg are important examples. The solemn images served »propaganda fidei«, the promotion of faith. Heavenly and worldly liturgy flowed into each other in the celebration of theHoly Mass as a synthesis of the arts and architecture, furnishings, clothing, altar equipment, text and music merged into a unity. The veneration of saints, worship and pilgrimages were specifically promoted. The religious conflicts and threats seemed to be over, the Church presented itself as »Ecclesia triumphans«.
