Gotik
Gothic Period
From the end of the 13th to the beginning of the 16th century, the Gothic style dominated art in Styria. It is determined by the urge for height, light, refinement and increasing realism. The church building was to give a promising idea of the Heavenly Jerusalem. The furnishing became more elaborate: The altars were increasing and were partly fitted with add-ons. Mural paintings served as a »biblia pauperum«, a catechesis of images for the common people. The veneration of the saints, above all of the Blessed Mother Mary, manifested itself in statues and pictures on wooden panels. The »Beautiful Madonnas«, the Pietà and the Virgin of Mercy are outstanding Marian images of this period. Stained glass windows as colourful, hope-giving carpets of salvation can be found in St Erhard/Breitenau, Leoben-Waasen, Graz-Leech or Maria-Straßengel. Art also responded to the existential threats of war, hunger and epidemics and interpreted the latter in a religious worldview.
