Romanik
Romanesque Period
From the 10th century, Salzburg has been the centre of power for mission and art development. Monasteries are the cultural institutions in the country: Göß, Admont, St Lambrecht, Rein, Seckau, Vorau and Stainz. Monastery churches such as Seckau are models for village churches. A considerable number still show their Romanesque origins. Charnel houses (ossuaries), like the one in Hartberg, illustrate the continuation of life in the hereafter. Sculpture can be seen in architectural ornaments, lions and tympanum figures. The furnishings of each church include sculptures of the Crucified and of Mary. Mural paintings serve as decoration; the most important ones can be found in the St John’s Chapel in Pürgg (1165). Utility items such as the procession cross from Pöls, the chasubles from Göß or the church doors of Dietmannsdorf have rarely been preserved. They show outstanding quality and deep symbolism.
